Four Provilan Clean Products Awarded the EU Ecolabel

Four Provilan Clean Products Awarded the EU Ecolabel

Exciting news for environmental excellence! Four of our Provilan Clean cleaning products are now EU Ecolabel certified. Two products have successfully renewed their existing certificates, and two are newly certified.

If you’re curious about what the certification involves - and which products are included - read all the details in our latest news post:

Independent environmental certification

Ecolabel is the EU official voluntary label for environmental excellence, so this is an important step forward for our pet safe, eco cleaning product range. It confirms the products have a lower environmental footprint, and that ingredients are sustainable and non-toxic or harmful.

Until recently, choosing cleaning products was only about visible results. Today, it's also about how the products impact health, homes, waterways, and the wider environment.

For us, it matters because cleaning isn’t just about what you see straight away. It’s also about:

  • reducing what ultimately ends up in waterways
  • keeping ingredient choices responsible
  • making it easier to choose products that are kind to people, pets, and the planet.

What is the EU Ecolabel?

EU Ecolabel is a voluntary scheme that identifies the environmental excellence of products and services, including clothing, cleaning products, electrical goods, paint, and hotels.

To qualify, products must meet strict environmental criteria across their entire life cycle - from formulation, to everyday use, through to disposal. This includes a close and independently verified look at how products interact with water systems, ecosystems, and natural resources.

As such, EU Ecolabel is trusted by people trying to find products with a low environmental impact that reduce chemical exposure and pollution. It makes the minefield of eco-conscious cleaning more transparent and easier to navigate.

What the EU Ecolabel assesses for cleaning products

The EU Ecolabel for hard surface detergents is a voluntary Type I ecolabel under Regulation (EC) No 66/2010. This certifies all purpose, kitchen, window and sanitary cleaners with reduced environmental impact across their life cycle.

To qualify, our Provilan Clean cleaning products had to meet strict mandatory criteria. These are defined by Commission Decision (EU) 2017/1217 for environmental responsibility and include:

  • Aquatic toxicity
Strict limits on toxicity to aquatic organisms. Critical dilution volume (CDV) thresholds measure how products affect aquatic life during regular and occasional use.
  • Biodegradability
All surfactants are aerobically biodegradable and not classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment. Organic content is also carefully controlled.
  • Ingredient restrictions
Certain hazardous substances, including specific preservatives, fragrances, colourants, and substances of very high concern are restricted or completely excluded.
  • Resource use and packaging
Packaging is responsible, minimal, recycled and/or easily to recycle

Together, these criteria ensure products reduce the overall environmental burden, particularly once they enter wastewater systems. In everyday cleaning, it’s easy to overlook what happens once products are washed away and disposed of.
